Werewolves, in my opinion, don't get the attention and credit they deserve. Vampires usually steal the spotlight, get the girl, and have people begging to be one of them. Our lycanthropic friends, however, tend to be depicted as hairy, drooly, sometimes mindless, beasts. Doesn't sound very appealing, does it? In The Mayfair Moon, J.A. Redmerski goes deep into the heart of the werewolf culture, shining light on a society that spans centuries filled with war, secrets, betrayal, dire consequences, and forbidden love ~ all the core elements of a juicy page-turner.

This book had me constantly chiming four little words: didn't see that coming. Just as soon as you get cozy with the way you think the story is going to go, it flips a switch and you're left reeling.

Hallowell, Maine is a very different place from anything Adria has ever known. Not only is her scenery changed, but her once-loving, big sister is practically a catatonic witch. The odd and strange becomes Adria's everyday life, and she can't help but question why: Why is her sister so different? Why are people getting sick? Why are the Mayfair's so interested in her? ... It's all quite a bit to take in for a girl who's life's already been turned upside down.

I'll admit, I expected another generic story about a young girl falling for the mysterious guy in school, a little bit of danger, and a happy ending, but I was pleasantly surprised to receive so much more. There's a foundation of werewolf history built here as we learn about their society, their politics, and how they came to be. It's not all supernatural glory ~ in fact, their life has a tinge of tragedy in almost every aspect, and I can't help but think it's the actions of their fathers that are to blame.

I really enjoyed all the unexpected connections that developed throughout the story. We find that not everyone is who we think they are, and it eventually comes to the point that we don't know friends from enemies. (Questions begged to be answered in the next novel, Kindred.) However, the connection between Adria and Isaac can never be questioned, although I did feel as if their relationship was a little forced and very sudden. At first, I had a difficult time believing their emotions for one another, but as their relationship grew, I found myself rooting for them.

Adria's role in the novel, I feel, will turn out to be much more than she, or we as readers, ever expected. I won't give away too much, but there are hints throughout the novel that had a tinge of foreshadowing I couldn't ignore. There are secrets about her own life before the Mayfair's she hasn't yet discovered, and I think her place in the werewolf world will change the course of its history.

So many unanswered questions! Who is Adria? What are Trajan and Viktor to each other, really? What's a Praverian Chronicle? ...

***I loved this book.***

Happy Reading :)

The Mayfair Moon The Darkwoods Trilogy J A Redmerski Books Reviews

I tried to love this book, but truthfully it really bored me. ive been working on it for about a month now, and it is really hard to get to the end. Not much is going on at all, its kind of like a Twilight story, with wolves instead of vamps. and a whole lot of nothing is going on. Its not dark, its not sexy. Not feeling the "love" story. Im sorry for this review, as I love her other books. The In the Company of Killers series is one of my all time favorites. so much goes on in each book. this one not so much.
Favorite Quote(s)

“And I thought that maybe I wasn’t so different after all. Everyone has their own troubles, their own battles to fight. Everyone eventually faces darkness and hardship. Mine was just a little out of the ordinary and I could live with that.”
Favorite Character Adria.
First Line

“No one used the F-word more than my step-dad, Jeff.”
My Musings I’ve read J.A. Redmerski’s published novels, The Edge of Always and The Edge of Never, and I loved her writing style. So when I saw The Mayfair Moon on , I had to one-click. I was interested to see what J.A could do with paranormal.

“His whole body jerked forward, plunging him into the frigid, white ground. He was on his hands and knees, his head rolled up and backward, the whites of his eyes churning black. The first fiendish growl ripped through the air, echoing off every looming tree.”
The Mayfair Moon‘s paranormal creature of choice is werewolves. However, they are not werewolves as we think of them. Instead, J.A’s werewolves changed into half-human, half-beast creatures. At first, I was shocked and a bit grossed out, but that feeling eventually passed.

The Mayfair Moon was a very interesting novel. It follows Adria as she starts her new life up north after an attack by a half-beast–a werewolf. After the day that Adria and her sister are attacked, her sister starts behaving oddly. Eventually, Adria is thrust into a world where there are two warring packs, and her sister is part of one, and not to mention, they want her dead because of what she knows. Luckily, Adria befriends Zia, who is a part of the other pack, and they become friends. And soon, Adria finds herself falling for the ‘prince’ of the pack, Isaac.

“Isaac Mayfair was my world now.”
I liked Adria’s character. She was expressive and brave, and she assimilated well into the world in which she was thrown. She was tough, as well, and didn’t go running and hiding when danger came her way. I could really relate to her, and that made her shine.

“Isaac was way too controlled, so much that it made him unreadable.”
Isaac was the brooding type. Quiet, observant, powerful those worlds pretty much sum him up. Although he was dismissive of Adria at first, they started warming up to each other as the novel went on. I’m glad that they didn’t have an insta-love–only an insta-attraction, which is more realistic.

“Isaac leaned in and kissed me long and hard on the forehead. I could feel the unbridled emotion in his touch, the undeniable need to protect me from everything. The warmth from his mouth spread all throughout my body.”
I also enjoyed the two of them together. Their personalities match up fantastically and they were definitely a power couple. Although they disagreed on some things and had some problems, they were still perfect for each other. They balanced each other out and brought out the best in each other. I can’t wait to see how their relationship continues to progress as the series goes on.

The world that J.A. built in this novel was unreal in a real way. It was creatively weaved and changed everything you thought you knew about werewolves. After the initial shock, I loved J.A’s use of half-human werewolves instead of the typical fully-transformed wolf. It really gave her an unique edge in the ever-growing world of werewolf-based paranormal novels.

The Mayfair Moon was a great novel with a unique concept that I couldn’t put down. After trucking through this novel at such a rapid pace, I can’t wait to see what else this series brings.

The Mirrored Ocean A Short Story eBook Luke F D Marsden

This is a short story told, in the first person, by a whale; a rather thoughtful whale that speculates on his surroundings and the meaning of the world above the surface. That sounds like either self-indulgent new-age mysticism or tiresome cute anthropomorphism. But author Luke F.D. Marsden manages to avoid both, albeit only just sometimes. The result is rather good.

We’re in the mind of a young male cachalot (sperm whale) as he dives for prey, crunches the odd octopus, and passes shoals of brightly-lit plankton in the deep ocean. Every now and then he goes to the surface to fill his lungs with air, as whales must, and wonders what is up there and what the moon and the stars are, and whether they mirror his world. “In these vast oceans, my home, which I understand so well, I have made it my purpose to come to know what happens in that world beyond the surface, that extends as far above it as the depths reach below it – perhaps further.”

Two things lift this story above the average. One is simply that it’s well-written; it’s a highly literate piece with simple but expressive prose. (The same is true of Marsden’s other short story, The Isle of the Antella.) The other is that Marsden actually has tried to get inside the head of a whale. God knows how you do that, but the narrative has a strange ring of truth. Thus, after diving to a great depth, the whale encounters “a colossal brute of a squid ... Eat him or die. Your belly is sated? It matters not. Eat him or die.” He struggles with the squid but does eat him, and takes a simple pleasure in what he has done: “What a hunt! What food … what … life!”

Now and then, Marsden does get just a little too close to anthropomorphising his whale – by having it assign the Moon a name, for example, and referring to its grandfather (to be sure, a whale would have one; but would it recognize him as such? I suppose we do not know). Also, Marsden has said the story – with its two worlds, of the undersea and the air above – is an allegory of the difference between the conscious and the subconscious minds. That did not really come across, though it is perhaps represented by the whale’s instinctive behavior below the surface, and its conscious speculation on its surroundings when it broke above it.

Nonetheless I liked this story. It’s a bold idea, but Marsden knows how far to take it; the story’s about the length it should be, so you can suspend disbelief. It’s also, as I said, rather well-written. A story with a whale as a narrator? Not everyone is Jack London, and this story could have fallen flat on its face. It doesn’t, and is oddly memorable.
If you are willing to empty your mind and let yourself go then read this book, once you are ready Luke Marsden is going to take you on a journey inside the mind and body of a whale. It is a fascinating idea, one thing that nature documentaries don't do, you don't get to realise just what the animals think. Luke takes you into the depths of the ocean where your internal organs are being cushed under the immense pressures, he takes you hunting resulting in a battle with a giant squid and he slowly takes you back to the surface to explode into the air to witness the moon.

Wonderful writing and I am sure it is all true, he really got inside the mind of a whale, he wouldn't lie to us... would he? Again Luke has produced a story like nothing I had read before.

Royal Romances Titillating Tales of Passion and Power in the Palaces of Europe Leslie Carroll 9780451238085 Books

This is a must read for those who don't read history books but are still fascinated with royalty. However, I did not rate this tome with the maximum number of stars because the author forgot to profile Charles and Camilla. The Duchess of Cornwall may not be beloved like the late Princess of Wales, but she and the Prince of Wales have been in love for forty-one years. Since most Hollywood marriages do not last past the honeymoon stage, I think that this should be regarded as a historical record for the late twentieth century/early twenty-first. It is a romantic royal marriage on the order of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, whom Carroll saw fit to mention. Wallis, like Camilla, was also a divorcee and a marriage breaker. She was married twice before she caught the eye of the future King Edward VIII, and is said to have filched husband number two away from his first wife.
so busy messing around. a fun read for a royalphile like myself. really enjoyed the book. amazing how much sneaking around
Being a lover of romance and royalty, this book was a clear winner in my opinion. The author takes you on a journey through the royal houses of Europe and over a span of 600 years, with some of the most romantic tales between paramours. I loved reading of the 30 pages average tales of people falling in love and doing many extravagant things to keep it. The lengths that some people went to to hold onto to their lovers was quite extraordinary, some risking their kingdoms and mortal souls for the one they loved.

I would have given this book five stars, but I found that I disagreed with one of the stories, that being Ludwig I of Bavaria and Lola Montez. I did not agree that this was a true royal romance. Though Ludwig gave up his kingdom for his mistress, I found that it was nothing more than an old man disillusioned about the love he thought he was getting from Lola, who I believe was just a gold digging, immature harlot who cared nothing for her "lover". The woman kept more than one lover in the home he set up for her and was only happy with what she could bleed out of the sovereign into her greedy hands. The story was a tragic circus, not a royal romance. How sad I feel for Ludwig, and the way he was treated by Lola.

Besides that, the book was very good and I will read more from this author in the future. I thought she should have included a few more romantic stories, but looking over her other books, I think she may have it covered just fine.
Fun book to read whether you are history buff or not. Not all of the facts are totally accurate but close so don
Complete historical smut but titillating.
Overall, the book was good but I do agree with previous reviews that the material tends to focus heavily on just a few historical figures while giving only scant information on others. I imagine there was a limit to the source material available, but several sections felt drawn out and repetitive. Overall, a very interesting and fun read - would reccomend!
I mean... come on... Leslie Carroll's books are fun! They are also well researched. If you are going to read some historical smut; make sure its at least correct!
Several of the stories made me cry. especially the mistresses of Louis XIV. I couldn't imagine how cold he could be to the women he'd spent so much time loving! But the story of Bertie and Betty absolutely made up for all of the sadness in the rest of the book. Up until the comment about Queen Elizabeth's jubilee and how it was a bittersweet moment for the Queen Mother, who had to realize that because her daughter had reigned for 50 years, the Queen Mother had been without her husband for the same amount of time. Someone pass the tissues!
Andy and his daughter Charlene, Charlie for short, are on the run. A government agency known as The Shop are after them. Years ago, The Shop was responsible for administering a secret experiemental drug into the veins of Charlie's parents when they were broke and naive college kids. The drug, called Lot Number Six, went helter-skelter through most of it's test subjects causing carnage which required a massive government effort to coverup the mess. For Charlie's parents, something in the drug altered their body chemistry. Her mother possessed a mild form of ESP where she could occasionally move things with her mind. Her father, Andy, could now "push" people into believing and doing what he wanted. Falling in love after being brought together by this strange experiment, they had Charlie and if you thought her parents had special abilities, wait until you get a load of what Charlie can do! The girl is a human flame thrower. She can create fires simply by using her mind to push it out and, as she got older, her powers became stronger. Now the government wants to control her ability and will stop at nothing to capture it.

Firestarter seems to be an under appreciated tale, if such a thing were ever possible, from Stephen King. It never seems to be on any list touting his greatest works. It is, however, a very worthy story with strong characters mixed with a story that feels like it's smack dab out of the late 1970's TV show, In Search Of. ESP and government conspiracy cover ups were huge back then and, with how little people trust the government currently, it doesn't seem to be out of the possibility now. While its way too easy to say that this is simply a watered-down derivative of Carrie, Firestarter is much more and definitely worth checking out.

4 1/2 Hot Potatoes out of 5

You can also follow my reviews at the following links:

[...]

[...]

[...]

Firestarter Stephen King 9780451167804 Books Reviews

Kudos for King delivering a great read. Upon reading this I thought I knew what to expect due to me watching the movie many times, boy was I wrong, I loved Andy for always being such a great dad and of course Charlie whom I think was born into doom with her powers and all. I was very surprised that the indian Rainbird was as cold and vicious maybe a little bit of a pedophile with his feelings for Charlie, he was obsessed about winning her over and killing while looking in to her eyes, how weird is that ? I only wished Charlie mother could have lived and the family would have beat all odds and still been able to be free and live a happy life. I never liked the "shop" agency people and was glad when she set their a****! on fire they deserved every bit in my opinion.
I like suspense and to be kept in the dark and being surprised, apart from the movie the book still has some tidbits that wasn't in the movie, and I was entertained and give this book a five star rating.
I am always in awe of how Stephen King writes characters that most writers, especially horror writers use as props. Women, children, gay people, people who are neuro-atypical or physiologically different, alcoholics, Stephen treats them all with the same respect and delights in tormenting them just as much as he does those characters who traditionally take center stage. As much as I enjoy his newer stuff, there is something amazing about Old School Stephen King and this is a fantastic example of Stephen at his best.
Firestarter is the story of Andy McGee, possessing mild powers of mind domination, and his young daughter, Charlie McGee, possessing very un-mild powers of pyrokinesis. The story begins with Andy and Charlie on the run from agents of a mysterious government intelligence agency called the Shop. We learn how Andy and his wife got their powers and how she died from flashbacks interspersed with the main story. The antagonist the government, as represented by the Shop, and the primary antagonist from the Shop is Rainbird, kind of a poor man's Anton Chigurh, so loaded with traits and quirks something the whole is less than the sum.

It is very much the kind of story Stephen King is known for. Heavy on suspense (with a lot of prescient comments dropped), use of science fiction tropes (psionic powers), heavy characterization, and philosophical sensibilities. The characterization isn't nearly as strong as in The Stand, for example, but the philosophical musings are better. King's strength isn't from dealing with it in the abstract (The Stand suffers from too much of this), but from dealing with it on a visceral level, e.g., capturing the impotent rage people feel when confronted by the Shop. He also nails the bureaucratic inefficiency inherent to a government agency, especially one as unanswerable to the public as a covert intelligence shop.
This is my all-time favorite Stephen King book, and the one I'd most love to see a sequel to. I bought it in hardback when it came out in 1981 and upon re-reading, it is still as strong as ever. If you like a good psy-talents, government conspiracy thriller, it doesn't get any better than this. I'll refer you to the publisher's description of the book, no point in me recapping that.

Unfortunately the ebook, was littered with errors. I'm absolutely astonished that the publisher didn't proofread the ebook. If publishers allow this many errors (seriously, you can't go ten pages without hitting one) then I have to ask why would any author go through a major publisher these days? You could hire an editor and a proofreader and then finally proof it yourself and come out with a better finished product.

That said, the strength of the book itself still overcomes. Five stars.
Mr. King has probably saved my life more times than I can remember. I've been in some dark holes within my own mind and his stories help to bring a little light when I'm absolutely lost. I know this isn't a review of Firestarter but I have wanted to tell Mr. King how much he has helped me along the way for a long time. I will consider this my message in a bottle and hope it washes up along some special beach in the Northeast 😉 Thanks SK...you the man!
"The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle" is British author Kirsty Wark's first novel. Set on the Scottish Isle of Arran, in the Firth of Clyde, the story goes back and forth in both time and character voices. One of the two main characters, Elizabeth Pringle, has just died in 2006 and has willed her island house to the mother of Martha Morrison. Martha's mother, Anna, has just been diagnosed with a form of dementia and is in a fitful condition. Wark's story is how the past encroaches on the present. Elizabeth's long, long life is at an end, while Martha's adult life is just beginning.

Wark's story is peopled with characters who seem just a touch different enough not to be stereotypes; "rugged island man", "mother with dementia", "bad-mood sister", "career woman who makes bad choices in lovers", and, of course, "island dweller who has 'secrets'". The expected love happens between characters...except when it doesn't. Love is thwarted by war and by departures to far off lands. Kirsty Wark has written a pleasant story of love and secrets that you'll enjoy reading but won't remember in six months that you've read it. And that's okay; not every book has to be "War and Peace". Just read it and enjoy it.

The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle Kirsty Wark 8601410694012 Books Reviews

Well written and moves along at a nice pace. Beautiful descriptive passages that really enhance the narrative. It kept me entertained until the end and left a nice aftertaste.
I purchased this book for my wife, as living in view of Arran and it being a special place for her, where she spent many holidays growing up, I thought she would enjoy it. My wife thought it was a great story and very emotional, but more a woman's book. She would highly recommend this book, even you didn't know anything about Arran.
Excellent read !
I was looking forward to reading this as I admire Kirsty Wark as a journalist. The book is well written and pleasant enough but it's rather a predictable story and really a romance which is a genre I don't usually read. I know Arran reasonably well so enjoyed the descriptions of the places. The chapters alternate between Elizabeth's diary telling the story of her life, and the story of Martha, the daughter of the woman Elizabeth left her house to, in the present time. Easy to read.
The idea of the scenery is the best thing about this book ... Scottish landscape and the surrounding seas evoked beautifully ... This is a bit of a disappointment in terms of a read , ( it's all very neat and a bit mills and boon ) but would make a fabulous 2 hour TV movie . Having said that , if you like mills and boon go for it , you'll love it !
From the beginning I really enjoyed this book. I liked the authors' style and how the story unfolded.

The story focused on Elizabeth's younger character and you don't learn if she matured enough to appreciate her mothers point of view in relation to the choices her Dad made.

I felt the last third was somewhat predictable and too perfect. For me the revelation wasn't the answer to everything and left holes in earlier parts of the story. It was almost rushed to wrap all story parts into one neat little bow. Without revealing a spoiler the part at the with the nephew was ridiculous and had nothing to contribute to the ending?!
I loved this book "so much" that I plan to buy three more and give them as gifts to three of my life-long friends and soul mates. Wark paints a picture of the island off the coast of Scotland with such elegant brush strokes of words. She pays attention to the plants and people with almost equal detail. As a bonus the view of growing old and death becomes such a gentle and smart topic that I wish the book was a standard library entry in all retirement homes. The young Martha provides the electric and modern moments that would keep a younger reader engaged and the mother daughter relationships of two very different families is explored in depth. The ending provides a "drop the book" revelation that will bring tears to a reader's eyes and make flipping the pages back to key moments a must. Love the book.
The interesting thing is that I bought it because the Princess Cruise we will be going on has it listed as a book discussion title for on board ship. Thanks Princess Cruises for a beautiful read.

The ThreeArched Bridge Ismail Kadare John Hodgson 9781559707923 Books

Narrated in the first-person by a monk named Gjon, THE THREE-ARCHED BRIDGE is an allegorical tale about the building of a bridge across a river, the Ujana e Keque ("Wicked Waters"), in 1377 in Albania (sometimes called Arberia in the novel). The central event in Gjon's tale is the immurement of a local young man, Murrash Zenebisha, in the structure of the bridge. Late-medieval Arberia is a region in which legends, ballads, imprecations, and betrayals proliferate, and in a twist on one of the most revered legends, Murrash Zenebisha is sacrificed (voluntarily?, or is he murdered?) and his body incorporated into the bridge, and then plastered over so that his white face stares out at the world, in order to save the bridge from mysterious forces that are working to bring it down. Not long after it is finished, the bridge becomes the site of bloodshed, in the first local skirmish with marauding Turks.

The three-arched bridge was a radically new development in Arberia. It was built to supplant a ferry enterprise, to the wonder and consternation of many. But, as with other changes in this feudal world that seem so momentous at first, most people eventually adapted to the bridge. There is one looming development, however, about which the monk Gjon cannot be sanguine or philosophic: the encroachment of the Turks (the Ottoman empire) upon the Balkans. "I saw Ottoman hordes flattening the world and creating in its place the land of Islam. * * * And our music, and dances, and costume, and our majestic language, harried by that terrible '-luk,' like a reptile's tail * * *. And above all I saw the long night coming in hours, for centuries." (Historically, the Battle of Kosovo, after which most of the Balkan peninsula became vassal states to the Ottomans, occurred in 1389, twelve years after the time of Gjon's tale.)

At the beginning of the novel, Gjon explains why he is setting down his narrative: "To stop them spreading truths and untruths about this bridge in the eleven languages of the peninsula, I will attempt to write the whole truth about it: in other words, to record the lie we saw and the truth we did not see * * *."
The ThreeArched Bridge Ismail Kadare John Hodgson 9781559707923 Books Reviews

A good historical book. I enjoyed very much. It is easy to read, has a good pace, and it is entertaining.
it's a good read I like the part about the three brothers
This novel truly takes you back in time. Kadare does a masterful job in emerging the reader in a time period that is long gone. You feel enthralled by the story yet thankful you live in the modern days. What does one do when a powerful empire approches? You basically rely on your faith, which is what the monk did. I enjoyed this book.
I never heard of Kidare until I ran across a review of this book in the NY Times. I am glad I was introduced and look forward to reading his other works. This was a special read; deceptively simple prose, characters, themes and storyline. (Isn't it the simple things that are the best?) The book is loaded with religious imagery; the narrator, a 14th century monk, the three-arched bridge, the designer and master-builder. As in all good literature the setting transcends the particular to the universal. The pre-reformation setting mirrors the world in which we live in today. The novel tells the story of old-money (the boats & rafts, co.) and the inherent old way of doing things versus progress (the bridges & roads, co.) and its inherent changes. Over all this looms the State, both old (the liege Count) and the new (the expanding Ottoman Empire), threatening to undue everything. Intermingled with this struggle are the roles of superstition, religion and myth. Wonderful stuff!
It is the Spring of 1378 and change is a foot in the Balkan Peninsula. The Byzantine Empire is in steady decline and the Ottoman Turks are surging. Christendom is devided and unable to check the Ottoman's steady advance. Meanwhile in an Albanian backwater, outsiders have come to build a bridge across a strategically important river.

On the surface, "The Three Arched Bridge" is the story of the conflict surrounding the building of a stone bridge. However, this is a novel produced during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. Like any well written Eastern European novel of the period, there is a deeper meaning interwoven into the threads of the text. The pleasure of this novel is teasing out the allegory that Kadare has so skillfully placed into his novel.

Ismail Kadare is a perennial candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature and he is also the innaugural winner of the Man Booker International Prize. "The Three Arched Bridge" is literature at its very best. Although I have some knowledge of Balkan history, this book would have been more enjoyable if my understanding of the region had been more profound.

There is one looming development, however, about which the monk Gjon cannot be sanguine or philosophic the encroachment of the Turks (the Ottoman empire) upon the Balkans.

At the beginning of the novel, Gjon explains why he is setting down his narrative "To stop them spreading truths and untruths about this bridge in the eleven languages of the peninsula, I will attempt to write the whole truth about it in other words, to record the lie we saw and the truth we did not see * * *." At the end, however, it still is not clear what was lie and what was truth. THE THREE-ARCHED BRIDGE is densely layered and multi-faceted in potential interpretatons and meanings, in addition to the basic one that it is a portrayal of late-medieval Albania. (Is it also some sort of comment on Enver Hoxha's totalitarian regime in Albania, which was near its height at the time of the novel's publication?)

What truly distinguishes THE THREE-ARCHED BRIDGE is the writing -- straightforward and spare, yet colorful, imbued with magic, and compelling. Bonfire of the Vanities has made me a Tom Wolfe fan. It paints a truthful picture of late 20th Century morality. There are no heroes in this book. The egos and dark flaws of its characters are on display for the world to read. Who knows? You might find a bit of yourself in this classic. I don't consider myself a student of literature, but I'd be surprised if this book wasn't required reading for literature majors, or perhaps social studies and first year law students . It's a great read.

The Right Stuff Tom Wolfe 9780312427566 Books Reviews

Tom Wolfe’s account of the test pilot program in the time of Chuck Yeager and the Mercury astronauts is a fascinating look back at a special time in American history. His sardonic take on many details had me laughing, and his genuine love and admiration for the men involved comes shining through in his writing. A line from the end probably sums it up best “but the day when an astronaut could parade up Broadway while traffic policemen wept in the intersections was no more."
This was the story of that time.
The Right Stuff is the story of 7 men chosen for the Mercury space program and also about the life of Chuck Yeager, a very talented test pilot. Most of the story takes place from the late 50's when the U.S. was in a race with Russia to reach outer space. There was a lot of pressure on the U.S. because Russia had already sent out the first manned space flight. Personally I liked the story a lot, it was very interesting, but I feel like the story spent a lot of time around things that were not important to the progression of the story. Examples of this is when they are all sitting around at their hangout, not really doing anything. The characters were very interesting though, at first they were kind of low down and rowdy, but as the story progresses they end up much more mature and helpful to each other. I learned a lot from this book, such as Who broke the sound barrier first, who the first to go into space were, and how they all got there. I would recommend this book to those who are looking for an interesting story about the advancement of our current technology.
This book is about the Mercury Project, NASA’s first manned space missions, and the origins of the astronaut program.

Tom Wolfe was a practitioner of “New Journalism.” The only previous experience that I had with that style was with Hunter S. Thompson’s alcohol-and-other-drugs-fueled escapades in Las Vegas while covering a race for Sports Illustrated and his alcohol-fueled experiences at the Kentucky Derby. Based on those reading experiences, it was my understanding that one of the hallmarks of New Journalism was Journalist-as-Participant. The historical record, however, is pretty clear that a drunk Tom Wolfe had not, in fact, been blasted into orbit with John Glenn or any of the other Mercury 7 astronauts. How then is The Right Stuff an example New Journalism?

Well, Tom Wolfe wrote his butt off. The book reads more “literary” than as an object of traditional journalism. Let me explain…no, there is too much…let me sum up…A traditional journalistic or scholarly book about the early astronauts and “what made them tick” might include quotations from interviews with those astronauts and people that knew them, government officials and news reporters from the time, and maybe a few academics to provide some Authoritative Interpretation. The writer wouldn’t put forth a theory of their own about the astronaut motivations, or, if they did, there’d be a ton of explicit sources backing them up.

Tom Wolfe just puts his theories out there, front and center, and then writes with such force – with repeated interjections, sometimes with exclamations! – and capitalizations and callbacks and pretty descriptions and literary techniques that the reader will forget that they are reading some nonfiction book; this story may be (at least in some sense) true, but it reads like a novel. It never really dives into the minutiae of bureaucratic organization nor is it really interested in any one’s point of view other than that which drives the author’s central point the astronauts were military test pilots fueled by a Manly Competitive Desire to BE THE BEST and that performing well under pressure in that competition exhibits The Right Stuff (which is never explicitly defined, although I have my own theories).

I am a fan of David Foster Wallace’s writing, and I could see a clear influence from Tom Wolfe’s style in Wallace’s writing. And David Foster Wallace was certainly not the only literary writer influenced by Wolfe. Fans of literature really should check this out, just to trace back certain styles to their creator (or popularizer). Science fiction fans could be inspired by a (more or less) true account of fighter pilot personality and how their influence (or lack thereof) could impact a fictional space program. Fans of nonfiction could see that there are ways of telling a nonfiction story rather than the usual, traditional methodologies. I’d recommend this book to anyone, just with the disclaimer that it is NOT like the usual biographical or documentary-style rendition of the Mercury Project. The writer’s style is definitely noticeable, and some might be distracted by it (or it could just not be to their taste).
Written in his inimitable droll style Tom Wolfe in this novel pits the mores of the haves of the right upper Manhattan addresses against those of the have nots of the Bronx, all manipulated by the power structure of the over burdened judicial system as it seeks to maintain some sense of order, while pointing out the sort of corruption that can thrive in each segment of society.
Wolfe is a genius of unmasking our oh-so-carefully constructed fictious lives. Bonfire of the Vanities, so aptly named, scorches the network of lies, deceit, and hubris that we dare to call "society." The under belly Wolfe exposes runs the gambit from the justice-free judicial system to corrupt civil rights activists, and the hipocracy of upper middle class elitism. A devastating, yet entertaining novel that will wake you from your smug confidence that "all is right with the world."
After 30 years it still resonates -- kind of sad really. Excellent read, for "readers," not for those who like snippet type reading. Only beef. Why of all possible endings did he choose this one?! Very unsatisfying after a substantial commitment to the story. Feels like he rushed the ending.
After seeing the movie numerous times, I thought it was time to finally read the book. Although sometimes the language can be colorful and literary, overall I could not put it down, and finished it in just a few days.

The Praise Singer Mary Renault 9780375714207 Books

I have read all of Mary Renault's Greek history novels and this is my favorite. It is short and covers a brief period in the history of Greece. The character, the poet Simonides, had a long life and the story is told from his boyhood to his old age. He witnesses the loss of Ionia to the Persians and moves to Athens to meet Peisistratus the tyrant who compiled the works of Homer in written text to save it for posterity. He ruled for several periods and was ousted only to return to power. His sons ruled after his death and one, Hipparchus, is a friend of Simonides and a patron of the arts. He is murdered by the two lovers, Harmodius and Aristogeiton. They were credited with being democrats which was early propaganda. Statues were erected of them in Athens and taken by the Persians during the invasion. Alexander recovered the statues when he invaded Persia. This short novel is an enjoyable study of early Athens.
As Advertised.
there are many reviews of ms. renault's work here already, so i will keep this very brief the reason mary renault is my favorite author is that she can bring the emotional and human quality of her characters to the surface. she makes these long dead people with strange names come alive. she gives them a quotidian life. she makes them human, and humane. true, her knowledge of the ancient greeks is encyclopedic. true, her descriptions are wonderous, but her deep empathy for the people in her novels is what separates her from other historical writers. she also handles homoeroticism/homosocial behavior with a sweetness and sensitivity that demonstrates the value of the delicate bonds that men should be encouraged to explore and nurture. her compassion for the human experience is sometimes overwhelming.
Mary Renault's historical fiction is so enjoyable to read and so beautifully written that I can't recommend it enough. For those who want to know more about Greece and the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, or for those who just want a wonderful book that informs as it unrolls, this is it.
Mary Renault's books about early Greek history are superb. Her books based on Greek myth are excellent. Her later books about Alexander the Great were very good, but in my opinion her best works, in addition to this one, are The Mask of Apollo and The Last of the Wine.
Mary Renault was an English writer best known for her historical novels set in Ancient Greece. In addition to vivid fictional portrayals of Theseus, Socrates, Plato and Alexander the Great, she wrote a non-fiction biography of Alexander. If you have not yet read her work, do yourself a favor and purchase one of her novels... I particularly recommend either The Persian Boy or The Last of the Wine.
Another peerless classic about ancient Greece by Mary Renault. I wish she had written more. I feel as though I know Ancient Athens now; its agora and its alleyways. Also some of the islands and the sea between. I can almost taste the salt spray and feel the beat of the oars. What a gift she had!
Mary Renault weaves a compelling story around the life of Simonides, 556-468 B.C. a famous Greek lyric poet. Praise Singing refers to the mostly commissioned work to celebrate the famous deeds of heroes, kings and the like in a time when the wealthy heavily supported the arts and funded great prizes for poets and playwrights. She builds her story around what historic facts of the time are known, and this in itself makes a palatable history lesson. Simonides was remembered for his great oral knowledge of the entirety of the Homeric poems, strictly an oral tradition for thousands of years at the time he was born. True to his professional training, he had concerns about what would happen to the art of poetry when it was introduced to written word after thousands of years of an oral tradition. Eventually, he was commissioned to make that leap for posterity. He is also remembered for his method of storing huge amounts of information in his mind. Anecdotes that outlived him carry forward his explanation of his method as a mind palace which has been used as a Sherlock Holmes device in a recent production.

Although I enjoyed this story, I do not rate it above some all time Mary Renault favorites The King Must Die, The Bull from the Sea and others. She brought life and passion and great study to many of the stories of the ancient world. She had a unique gift for fully seizing the life essence of a historic or mythological character and memorably telling that story.

Beastly Kendra Chronicles Alex Flinn Books Reviews

I actually adored this book. Given that it had it's total cheesy moments, it was still a lovely little, quick read. There are some changes with characters, but that's to be expected when dealing with a "novel-to-film" work. There were moments in this story when I just wanted to snuggle the characters with love. My only thing with this book (and it's not major or anything) is the "chat room" experience. I've seen some reviews saying that they don't like it, or that it's distracting and whatnot, but I actually became more curious as to the whereabouts of those characters once the story was over. I'm still trying to find out who the bear was though. And what happened to the mermaid (Ariel)? Is her story based on the original book where she turns to foam (I know it's mentioned, but did it HAPPEN?) or was she able to swoon her prince in the last minute and have happily ever after (like in the animated film - though I seriously doubt it). Cute, modern day twist on one of my favorite Disney movies.
Life for Kyle Kingsbury is perfect. He’s good looking, charming, and one of the New York elite. But Kyle’s inside is ugly, and all it takes is one witch to notice that he’s rotten to the core. Now, he’s a gruesome sight and expected to find someone to love and kiss him before his time runs out. Kyle has always been told that beauty is only skin deep, but now that he doesn’t have his, he’ll have to learn to dig a little deeper.

Being in a reading slump is something that makes me cringe. Sadly, I found my self in the middle of one. I couldn’t get into any books, and decided to go back to an old favorite. I read Beastly before it was turned into a movie with the gorgeous Alex Pettyfer as the male lead, and, as a middle schooler with an affinity for the unrealistic, fell in love. I wish I could say that I enjoyed it that much this time around, and even though it took me no time at all to read it, it appealed more to my younger side.

The reason I might have enjoyed it more in middle school could have been because the characters were young. Kyle begins the novel as a shallow freshman in high school and does have the entire world in front of him, and he’s ready to take it on. He had two years to change himself completely, offering him plenty of time to get back to his old life, if he could complete the task.

If you haven’t figured out by now, Beastly is a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast—told in the city that never sleeps, New York City. The setting definitely created more of an issue for someone who couldn’t walk down the street without seeing his father on the megatron in Times Square. Since his father prided himself in how handsome he was, noticeable tension was created between the already nonexistent father/son relationship. It gave Kyle time to contemplate love within the family, and that sometimes family did not always translate to a blood relative.

Alex Flinn’s publisher has released a new version of this book that includes Lindy’s journal. I would love to see her thoughts before her time with Kyle and during, too. So, if you haven’t read this book yet, I would recommend getting a copy of that book! I’m having to convince myself that I don’t need it, that I already have the book. I might end up spending an entire day on the floor of a bookstore to read it.

If you love fairy tales, or if you just love love, I recommend anything by Alex Flinn. Her stories are timeless tales with a modern twist that even non-readers would enjoy. {3.5 Moriah @ A Leisure Moment}
I'm just going to come right out and say it- I didn't care at all about the Kramer ghost plot line. He was a sub par, annoying, cliche villian.
One Grave at a Time Jeaniene Frost 9780061783197 Books Reviews

I have been a Jeaniene Frost fan for a long time and felt really let down by this book. Cat and Bones are a great pair, no argument there, as well as all the other characters in the night huntress world. This book, however, was so boring. I found myself skimming and skipping pages to just finish it. I loved books 1-4, I loved Spade's story, and even Mencheres story which wasn't as good as Spade's but not as boring as this one. The last book (5) was good but not great like the others. I'd rather wait a year for a great new story then read a story that seemed sloppily put together quickly, and not with really any heart in it. If it wasn't for Ian and the other characters I would've stopped reading but I kept hoping it would get better. And really, one sex scene, come one. These books are notorious for their incredible sexualities and chemistry. This book lacked that. A sex flying scene with no detail or real passion or at least not enough to engage me, I expected more. I hope Vlad's book is great cause I have been waiting for his story for a long time like every other fan. I also hope the next book is Ian's story. God knows, he deserves it, and we all want it. I hope Frost does justice to these two very important characters. Spade got his and hopefully the rest will get theirs.
I mostly read contemporary romance, but I dabble in paranormal at times when I want to change it up. I've been hearing about this series for awhile and just never took the time to start reading it. I finally did, and I'm so glad! This series is superb. The characters are real (despite being vampires) and entertaining. The dialogue is snappy and funny. I devoured the first few books in one weekend. I can't wait to read more from this author!
I think that Cat & Bones just jumped the shark in this book. The other Dolls think I'm being polite because they think the shark was jumped in the last book. None the less, book five in the Night Huntress series finds Cat & Bones and their motley crew of allies fighting a 500 year old poltergeist serial killer who is readyto kill his next group of victims on Halloween. But how do you stop a ghost?

Frost leads us through Cat & Bones Ghost Busting 101as they consult with ghosts, then with mediums and then with a group of paranormal investigators. Really the only thing missing was to call the Catholic Church in and perform an exorcism. And why they didn't do that Frost only knows. So why do we care if every year a nasty ass ghost comes back to life and then rapes & kills three innocent women? This is the question Bones poses at one point in the story putting into perspective that yes it is a terrible thing but in light of ALL the terrible things going on in the world why prioritize this? Cat responds quite simply along the lines of because we can. Alright - but really - this may be the real issue with this book. The Challenges that Cat & Bones have faced in books one through three were so tough, so huge, so amazing and now they are battling a poltergeist. Hmmmm. Well - he's a very nasty dude but the whole story is just kind of "Meh."

Here's the problem. Frost is a really talented writer. Her action sequences are tight and explosive! Her dialog is snappy. She mixes in super natural creatures from vampires to demons. And while she didn't create vampires she certainly created a very new approach to the mythos when she created a half vampire who becomes a full vampire but must drink from the dead instead of the living. Oh, and when she drinks from the dead she can absorb their powers. That is creative! What isn't creative? Bones - who so strongly resembles Spike from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", I have a hard time separating the two in my mind; Juan, as the Latin Lover who must flirt with every woman; and now, Tyler, the over the top African-American Gay florist who is also a medium. Frankly, Tyler reminded me so strongly of Charlaine Harris' character Lafayette from the Sookie Stackhouse novels and later Alan Ball's "True Blood" version that I wondered how in the world she allowed herself to write this character. I just wish Frost would move away from the clichés and stereotypes.

The secondary story line involves a new manager replacing Tate as director of the government unit Cat used to work for. This story line is so boring. Frankly - maybe Frost should let that whole government story line die away. She's created such an interesting story line with the vampire network anything involving the human government just seems stupid.

One Grave at a Time was a letdown. It didn't move the overall story forward in an interesting way. The new characters were 2 dimensional stereotypes, and the sex scenes were weird. Really - having sex while flying in the air just because you can. O.o

So - where is Frost going with this series? Maybe it's run its course? I think that many great characters and stories are ruined because they are extended beyond their natural expiration date. Maybe an author can't let go of the character or the publisher can't let go of a success. And when you are as talented as Frost, your misses are much more noticeable. She is held to a higher standard. Unfair? Maybe but I don't think so. Now I ask myself - if Frost had carte blanche what would she write?
There's not much that hasn't been said about this timeless book. All I can say is I had never heard of it until my wife got pregnant and I began looking into books for babies/toddlers. This was at the top of my list after researching, and I'm so happy to have purchased it. The art, wording, alternating black and white with color pages, and storyline are wonderful. It engages my son, he loves looking at the bunnies, and it truly is a calming book for everyone before bedtime. This was written over 60 years ago, so it makes you feel a bit like you're in a bygone era. Simplicity, values, family and education are all focused on in this book. We've been reading it weekly for the past 20 months, and will continue to do so for another 40! I highly recommend this book, along with other Margaret Wise Brown books.
Read this to my children, gave as gifts to my grandchildren and just purchased it again for my great grandson. This is perfect for a little person who is too young for most childrens’ books. I like the way the pictures become darker as bedtime approaches. The board book can be touched by my five month old without it being harmed. I also like the fact that the central character is is bunny and culturally natural. Two of my great grandsons are mostly Scandinavian but the youngest little guy is half Hispanic/Dominican and all children can identify with a bunny.
I am pretty certain I ordered a new copy of this book to add to the collection I’ve started for my unborn son. This copy has worn edges and even has a personal note to somebody else’s kid written in it!
This book is missing a page. It hoes from the firat page which is "In the great green room there was a telephone and a red baloon and a picture of... Next it should say " a cow jumoing over the moon" but instead it goes straight to "and two little kittens and a pair of kittens" totally missing thw page about the cow jumping over the moon.
I wasn't going to buy this book for my child, assuming it was just another story for children that was popularized for no reason. However, my otherwise boisterous toddler proved that this book was worth it's weight in gold. From the first reading, she sat perfectly still, absorbing every word and picture of the book, and was completely fascinated from beginning to end. So much so, that she insists on me reading it over and over before bedtime, every night now. She seems to find something magic in the story that maybe only children can see. Indeed, this is a very special book. She particularly loves the mouse and the old lady whispering hush. I can't recommend this book enough. It is really amazing the effect it has had on my child!!!
Bought both hardcover and board book . . . hardcover version came w/outer cover, which was thin & wrinkled, pages weren't glossy (pages also thin, almost see-thru) expected better quality for price . . . board book version binding spine has gap when opening book to turn pages, illustrations and words are tiny. Kept the board book version only because though it would hold up better for 1 yr old, BUT had to order it twice because first one came scratched and top was peeling on front cover. Also, for those not familiar w/story please note that some pages are in black and white ... page where story says goodnight to mouse .. . mouse is really teeny tiny (in both hardcover/board book) ... and towards the end where story line says goodnight to turn off lights, illustrations were really dark and hard to distinguish. Could've, should've been way better.
The grandkids love it. I always give as baby gifts with Llama, Llama, Are you my Mama, Press Here by Herve Tuillet, Goodnight Moon (Lap Edition Board Book), Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you see?, There is a Bird on Your Head, I broke my Trunk and We are in a Book, all 3 by Mo Willems, and 2 by James Dean, Pete the Cat I love My White Shoes, and Pete the Cat and his four Groovy Buttons. These make terrific shower gifts that will far outlast any other gift and will instill the love of reading. and bonding. New MOMS read to your infants, expectant Moms, read to your fetuses. They do recognize Mom's voice. Research proves this!.

PS I am doing an EDIT because of comments I read regarding this classic. Please do your research and read about the psychology of this book, its author, Margaret Wise Brown whose biography, The Great Green Room was fascinating, and treat yourself to the DVD of this. Mesmerizing and soothing. By the way, you all missed the fact that the mouse's placement "moves" on each of the "colored" pages. Engage your little ones with, "where is the mouse"? I hope you are encouraged to revisit this book. It will be time well spent and definitely worth it.
I was hesitant to read the same story from a different point of view. I thought it would be a waste of time since I had already read Beautiful Disaster and with so many other books out there, why spend my time with this one. Well, Jamie McGuire changed my mind regarding different POV books! I loved this book and may have enjoyed it more than the first book. It was well-written, heart-wrenching and beautiful! Thank you for bringing these characters to life once again! I will continue to be a fan!

Walking Disaster A Novel Beautiful Disaster Series Jamie McGuire 9781476712987 Books Reviews

I am really really torn. Because I feel like I waited a LONG time for this book! And I loved Beautiful Disaster somethin' fierce. And there were some really amazing reviews of this book before it was released today.

And I did like this book!! I'm glad I read it! But there were a few little things that maybe didn't sit well with me. And I'm going to be a little harsh because I paid 8 bucks for this book. Apparently I'm a $1.99 whore because that's a lot of money for a book in my world and I expect BIG things when I've paid for editing and the publisher's promotion. ;)

The little intro to the book starts with Travis as a 3 year old about to lose his mom. And while some of that did pull on my heart strings a little, it didn't seem realistic from a 3 year old's point of view. Just my humble opinion, but I work with 3 year olds and I have a 3 year old.... so it just didn't sit well with me. Maybe started me off on the wrong foot?

You have to read Beautiful Disaster before this one. This is not a stand alone book. Because this book doesn't even have the 1st meeting between Travis and Abby.
That's a pro and con in my book. A pro because all too many love stories have this hot instant "love" from the 1st look. And it can come across cheesy. But Travis needed a little more time to see Abby that way. And that's more realistic I guess. But it's a con in that while waiting for this book I guess I assumed it'd be in there. And I'd get to hear what he thought of the 1st second he saw her.

There were a few little scenes that we didn't get to see with Abby. And I LOVED those! Ok... maybe not the one where he's "bagging" some chick on a couch, but the ones that involved Abby. I feel like that's why I read the book and it offered a little excitement to what I already knew what would happen.
And we get a little peek into Travis' life... but not this long road down his past that would bore you to tears. I'm so glad for that! But sorry for you if you like to read chapters on end of boring history where you already know what happens.

I also loved being in Travis' head and watching him slowly realize he loves Abby. That was really really sweet. And the part that made it worth reading the book. The part that bumped my stars up. Because even though he is a hot mess... I couldn't help but love him.

And a hot mess he is. Over protective, womanizer, hot headed, anger-freak, and sometimes jerk.... and what is wrong with me because I still loved him. But it's only because this is fake. This is why I read. I really hope no one is reading this as a dating guide, trying to find their own hotheaded pig they so desperately want to change into a hero.

I'm also glad I knew Abby in the other book. Because she was kind of a little boring in the 1st big chunk of this one. And I wouldn't really have believed that he could have fallen so hard for her. What did he love about her besides the fact that she was hot and yet acted irritated with him? And some readers may not like her as much in this one... or like her even less if you didn't like her before. She broke my heart when she broke his. (

And sometimes it didn't really sound like I was in Travis' head... but got a little more of the author's mind. Just little places where it was a little out of character for him to have thought or said something descriptive. And what was with him only using the word "Bag?" I think I almost would have preferred he throw and "f" word in there or said "Screw" or "hook up" or "bump uglies" just to get some variety!

I was done with the name "Pigeon" by the end of BD, but after Travis' description of it and his adoration for it... I think it grew on me. A teeny tiny minuscule amount. ;) But that was definitely some good that came out of this book.

In the end, I'm so glad I read this. While there were times this went flat for me because there is a MASSIVE amount of cut and paste from the last book, I still enjoyed a good bit of it. I just wish I hadn't read BD right before to prepare.

If you loved BD I would think this is worth a read. Just not anytime soon after you've finished the first one. And wait to see if the price drops. I'm sad I paid so much for this one. (
I loved Beautiful Disaster! Walking Disaster, which is told in Travis' point of view was equally amazing. I loved everything about this book. I hung on to every word and shed a few tears. Walking Disaster had me yet again reading well into the wee hours of morning. I couldn't put this book down.

Jamie McGuire did an excellent job in portraying Travis. His internal dialogue, his emotions, his side of the story was written beautifully. My expectations of this book were set pretty high I must admit. Ms. McGuire went above and beyond my expectations. She nailed Travis Maddox's POV. Reading his story and "seeing" things from his perspective really tied up some loose ends in Beautiful Disaster.

The heartache he experienced was so emotional. I got teary eyed more than once throughout this story. Ms. McGuire is able to write with such intense feeling and thorough descriptions of what each character is going through that you almost feel like you're right there along side with them—experiencing their pain, their happiness, their joy, their sadness.

Another five star read from Jamie McGuire. I'm off to read Beautiful Wedding. I can't get enough of this series. Believe me, you won't be able to either.
So often in romance stories, you only get the females perspective with maybe a chapter or 2 of what the guy thinks. To have a whole book dedicated to hearing a familiar story from the male perspective was enlightening.
I met Abby and Travis in the first book. And, while they were disfunction bordering on crazy, it was a good read. So, to read this book and see their relationship through Travis' eyes explained a lot. Like how much he loved her, why he loved so hard, how could he think of agreeing to work for a shady character; all of it becomes clearer and explains some of his obsession with Abby.
If you have not read the first book, do it. This is truly one where you should read them in order to get the full picture.
Walking Disaster is Beautiful Disaster from Travis' POV. There is a lot of the same dialogue from Beautiful Disaster in this book. If you're looking for something completely different from BD then this is not the book for you. I loved Travis in BD and I felt like I had a really good understanding of who Travis was and what he was feeling by reading through Abby's POV in BD. This book just gives you that extra something special with Travis. A beautiful prologue where you get to see more into Travis' childhood and an amazing Epilogue that puts you into the future years later. You also get some conversations between America and Travis and Shepley and Travis that you didn't get in BD. Overall, this was just the cherry on top. If you're a hardcore Travis lover, then you'll enjoy this.
I was so excited to read the story from Travis's point of view that I bought it with one click. What a mistake. I loved Beautiful Disaster. I had hoped this book would explain what he could be such a jerk at times. But it was basically a carbon copy of the original. The writer is so darn lazy!!! I am ticked that I wasted my money on this garbage. She actually copied and pasted certain scenes from the other book. I mean they are - word for word. Apparently Travis POV is the exact same as Abby's. I wont read another book by this so called writer. I wanted to know more about the other brothers but this crap book has deterred me from spending another cent.
I thought it would be a waste of time since I had already read Beautiful Disaster and with so many other books out there, why spend my time with this one. I understand that Ms. Cooney cut up what
would be a really awesome novel, into several shorter novels in order to maximize profit. The story would have been much better as a whole. I probably won't purchase any more of Ms. Cooney books when I finish this series. I don't think this writing device is very honest, and I won't reward it by purchasing more of her books.
Love that they continued this story.
Love this series. A great read.
I bought the first one - "The Face on the Milkcarton" - because it was such an interesting and unique story line. I continue to enjoy the books; Cooney's characters are not one dimensional. Good series, easy reads.
My daughter loves these books. She is 12!
This is one book in a series of books. I did not finish it, but will go back and read it again. I do not like too much repetition, I get bored and need to go to something else then come back to these series books.
Based on a true story. Also sequels
I'm a senior citizen, but I loved the Janey series by Caroline B. Cooney. Our library had all but this book, so I donated it, to finish their series.
I understand that Ms. Cooney cut up what
would be a really awesome novel, into several shorter novels in order to maximize profit. The story would have been much better as a whole. Sometimes a simple, fun, rollicking yarn is what is called for - and sometimes you yearn for something a lot more. The Thomas Covenant series deliver an epic package unlike any other, full of richly entrancing and engrossing world building which is amazingly topped by the character development that delves deeply into the human psyche while presenting and chewing through challenging physical and philosophical dilemmas. The end result always leaves me feeling challenged and rewarded. The first two trilogies are simply fabulous, while the third set of TC books are of definite interest but lack a bit of the cohesion of the rest. As an aside, I have not been able to enjoy or finish Donaldson’s Gap Series at all, but the Thomas Covenant series ranks as possibly my favorite fantasy series ever; completely different experiences between the two.

Lord Foul Bane The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever Book 1 Stephen R Donaldson 9780345348654 Books Reviews

I've dreamed of this day for nearly 2 whole weeks, the day when I can finally put this book aside. A fantastic day it will be, I dreamed, bereft of vocabularic oddities and tangential, leperous rage. A day when I can look forward to discovering a new text with the potential to carry me away to a new land of fantasy and brilliance. A land uncluttered by near meaningless utterings like "the perception abashed his vehemence" or "he was hauled into the air like a sack of miscellaneous helplessness".

You may wonder, as I have for 10 straight days, why would one continue on a path so strewn with stupid boulders, so wracked with eye-rollingly incredulous exasperation, that most people in similar situations would just abandon that quest. This is something I still ponder. I guess the simplest explanation is, the story itself isn't half bad.

The premise seems a bit, well, misguided, I guess, or possibly ill-conceived. A man learns he is a leper. Really? A leper? OK fine, I'll go along with it. After hearing this terrible news, his wife takes their son and divorces him, leaving him to live alone with what's left of his life and a tidy sum earned by a best selling novel he wrote years before, on a farm in a small town. The news of his disease has also made him an outcast in town. His neighbors have been anonymously pre-paid his bills leaving hoping he would stay put and not infect the town with his leprosy. He's forced to confront the situation, deciding one day to pay his phone bill in person. Yadda, yadda, he encounters a berobed beggar, possibly a destitute ethics professor, he lays upon him a query; "A real man—real in all the ways that we recognize as real—finds himself suddenly abstracted from the world and deposited in a physical situation which could not possibly exist sounds have aroma, smells have color and depth, sights have texture, touches have pitch and timbre. There he is informed by a disembodied voice that he has been brought to that place as a champion for his world. He must fight to the death in single combat against a champion from another world. If he is defeated, he will die, and his world—the real world—will be destroyed because it lacks the inner strength to survive. The man refuses to believe that what he is told is true. He asserts that he is either dreaming or hallucinating and declines to be put in the false position of fighting to the death where no “real” danger exists. He is implacable in his determination to disbelieve his apparent situation and does not defend himself when he is attacked by the champion of the other world. Question is the man’s behavior courageous or cowardly? This is the fundamental question of ethics.

And so begins his fantastical tale, the part of the story that actually engages me. The story from here checks all of the boxes labeled "Tale of Heroic Fantasy". An evildoer to do battle with, strange encounters with the indigenous inhabitants, and even an Epic Quest to save the land. Lots of fun to be had within those parameters. If you can see your way past occasional outbursts of rage and incoherence on the part of the protagonist, then I think you'll find this book pleasing by the time the end comes along.
Yes, it's been over 30 years since I first read this book. It was good then and even better now. I think Stephen knows we're all lepers in one way or another, so we can identify with the hero. Overcoming that thing which seeks to hold us back is a lifelong struggle and only ends at the end.
It wasn't until I was several chapters into The Illearth War that I fully developed my opinion of Stephen Donaldson's first Thomas Covenant book Lord Foul's Bane. When Covenant says, "I'm a leper," which he says far too often, he is really making a statement about the human condition in general and our perception of ourselves in general. It is more of a mantra meant to root himself in his preconceived notion of reality than a statement of fact. The author is reminding us that we really don't have any idea what 'reality' is though we are constantly filtering our perceptions through our prejudices about it. Covenant would rather cling to his notion of reality even with its dire illness and despair than accept another reality in which he is healthy, needed and loved. If he did not carry all the baggage of his opinions and prejudices it might occur to him how unlikely it is that a simple 'dream' would have the massive amount of detail, depth and length of time that his sojourns in The Land entail. He might have given more weight to the unusual and philosophical 'beggar' who he met just before entering The Land for the first time.

The core premise is a good one. What is reality? It's a great question because it's an eternal question and because if you if you really face up to the question it won't go away.

The book has a Tolkien like quality without copying any of Tolkien's stuff which is enjoyable in spite of Thomas Covenant's weird anti-hero persona. The book is very well written although occasionally Donaldson uses unnecessarily obscure words, for example "demesne" instead of domain, where they do not enhance the meaning or flavor of the story.

Despite the fact that Thomas Covenant is by far the most annoying protagonist I've encountered in decades of reading I did enjoy Lord Foul's Bane. I thought Robin Hobb's characters did a lot of whining until I read this book. But Fitz from the Six Duchies books is a rank amateur in the whining department compared to Covenant. Could it be that Hobb was inspired by Stephen Donaldson's character? Nevertheless it's a great read.

Highly recommended.
I enjoyed the first book in the series though at this point I think it should’ve been a single longer novel. This series is becoming pure fantasy, in the space of a dozen years barbarian civilizations have figured out how to make bazookas, anti aircraft guns etc. and the Nantucket people are like the Swiss Family Robinson on steroids. A couple thousand average modern Americans could barely figure out how to survive much less start a worldwide military empire from scratch in a decade.
Good idea but a little out there, I wouldn’t waste my money buying it again and am not sure if I’ll even finish this book much less the series.

Against the Tide of Years S M Stirling 9780451457431 Books Reviews

Here is a scify story that is believable. Once again S.M.Sterling has done a great job of story telling; and the problems faced by 20 Century sent back to the Bronze Age. There is nothing magical or super natural the time travelers have other then history and a willingness to survive. The only things negative about the story, for me, was it ended - I really enjoyed the story and I would think you would as well.
As a scifi writer (Chronicles of Aria Prime, Episode One), I'm a sucker for alternate reality novels. The second in the Nantucket series, Against the Tide of years is set eight years after "the event", as the time displacement has come to be called. In that time, the Islanders have fought wars, stabilized the island as an industrial and political powerhouse, and are now living at a much more subsistence level than in the twentieth century. They have met with many of the cultures of the day, and are working to form an alliance that will put an end the renegade William Walker.

Early on, it's apparent that the Islanders are masters at adapting nineteenth and twentieth century technology to 1250 BC. For example, near the beginning of the story, we see a steam powered semi-truck. They've also progressed in what they can build, as the crossbows of book one have been replaced with muzzleloaders. Stirling goes into a lot of detail on many of these inventions, how they were built, and how they were adapted. For some people, this may bog the story down. However, I love the techno-stuff (and I tend to believe most of Stirling's fans do as well), so for me, this added to the story rather than take away.

Much of the plot hangs on the Islanders' formation of an alliance with the Mesopotamian king Shiumash. They hope that by aiding him and increasing stability in the region, he will provide them with the man-power they need to defeat William Walker in Greece. This proves move difficult than originally thought due to Tartessian pirates, working loosely under the command of Isketerol, the native whose power is based on early ties to both the Islanders and the renegade Walker.

Throughout the book, we see a stark difference between the Islanders and Walker. Walker has embraced brutality and slavery to get him what he wants. The Islanders, however, have brought the ideas of late twentieth century to 1250 BC. Freedom, liberty, gender and racial equality are embraced by the people of the island. This is not to say, however, that there are not conflicts. Certain individuals don't mind giving Indians whiskey before a trade, there are disagreements over how to deal with Walker, and so on.

While Island in the Sea of Time is my favorite in the series, this is still a good read. I highly recommend picking it up.
Against the Tide of Years is a step down from Island in the Sea of Time, the first book in the series, but it's still entertaining.

The flaws in the first book are still there everything is just a bit too easy for the good guys. I said in my review of the first book that it's like watching someone else play a computer game. I'll amend that it's like watching someone else play a computer game on a difficulty setting that's too easy for them.

In addition, while this book introduces several younger Islander characters to supplement the returning characters from the first book, they're much less interesting than their elders--perhaps that's in part because they all grew up in a similar environment. Fortunately, there are a host of new "local" characters who are quite varied and well-drawn.

Unlike the first book, this one spreads itself too thin. There's a Lewis and Clark type expedition, for example, which is an unnecessary addition. Maybe it's setting up something for the third book, but as it is it needed either more pages devoted to it or fewer. Likewise, Odysseus makes an appearance, and it seems as if he's going to be a major character, but then he fades from the action.

At one point, this even rises to the point of what I'd consider a continuity error. There is a flotilla of Islander ships that get separated by a storm. For a time, we follow the fate of one of them. But then we never find out what happened to the other ships. Given the concern the Islanders usually show for their people, there should be at least a mention somewhere of those ships having made it through safely, or getting destroyed, or being missing--I kept waiting for it, but if it was in there, I missed it.

Finally, a warning this book ends at a point that seems almost arbitrary. There is no particular final climax or resolution.

Still, it was enjoyable enough that I'm now going to buy the third book in the series.

Arise Book Three of The Syrenka Series Amber Garr 9781477559154 Books

Eviana, betrayed, kidnapped, worrying for the life of the man that she has finally realized she loves, and fighting to care about anything, including surviving her own prison, is trapped somewhere in the world by her captor Lucian Sutherland. Having left Kain on the verge of death after Sutherland plunged a sword into his back, through his ribs and just under his heart, Eviana worries that she'll never see his handsome face again. Her selkie, Brendan, having abandoned her in favor of the call and the urge to go mate with a human female, ripped out her heart and destroyed her past hope that he could ever really care for her like he professed. Graham, the council member that had spent time helping her train and hone her skills having betrayed her to directly into Sutherland's hands and admitting that he was the one responsible for capsizing and sinking an entire cruise ship that had a whole clan of mermaids on it, trapping them beneath the water so that they couldn't surface for air and ripping them apart-just to send a message.
Now, trapped on a small island with Sutherland and Graham, Graham and Eviana are being held prisoner. Graham receives beatings on a normal basis, presumable for having tried to warn Eviana away from Sutherland. They are both drugged, through needle or food forms, and told repeatedly they need to learn their places and what they are supposed to do. Unable to help herself, Eviana finds herself believing that there has to be some good in Graham and that he has to see how insane and horrible Sutherland is after all of his beatings. She secretly sneaks out to aid Graham in the evenings, trying to help him heal and hopefully give him some comfort. Her friends and family, however many miles away they are, search frantically for her, hoping beyond anything that she is still alive after her kidnapping. Kain, recovering from his wounds and weak, is anxious to find a way to break her free from whatever prison she's in and turns to Abhainn, the water sprite, in hopes that he can work another miracle and locate Eviana as well as help with an escape plan.
With the council on the edge of uproar, the world on the brink of war, and Sutherland edging closer and closer to victory and world domination, Kain is pressured to rescue Eviana, keeps their clans safe, protect those he loves and cares about, and figuring out what in the world Sutherland has up his sleeve next. But the question keeps haunting them all, how will they survive when so many other have failed, fallen, died, and are already bowing to the madman seeking power, fortune, fame, and endless renown? Which of their friends or family will be next to fall at his hands and will any of them ever be safe?
Good for young adult, females. Deals with topics of betrayal, family, relationships, loss, love, and fairy tale.

Arise Book Three of The Syrenka Series Amber Garr 9781477559154 Books Reviews

This book is a wonderful story and very well written. I couldn't put it down. The writer draws you into the story and twist you in so many directions to keep you intrigued.
Enjoyed the plot and plan to read the series.
The perfect book for young readers. Well written with so much excitement and breathtaking adventures with a very happy ending. As it should be.
This is the first time I have read a book about mermaids. I just wanted to read something different, I didn't want to put the book down it was good all the way from beginning to the end. I hope to find another book like this one to read.
I'm not normally one for mermaid tales but this series won me over. There were quite a few surprises I didn't predict.
This is the final installment of this series. And I would say if you enjoyed the first two stories, you enjoy this one as well. The story ends as it should. I was not able to put down any of these stories. But I still only gave the read 4 stars as I probably wouldn't re read the series.
I read all three books. It was very easy reading. Reminded me of something I would have read in grade school. It was a romantic Harry potter meets mermaid theme. Wasn't the most challenging book series I've ever read, but I was addicted and had to read all three. Would really only recommend to a female crowd. It's a romantic heartthrob style series with fantasy and sci-fi feel. A little too much mushy mushy love descriptions of a teenage hormones, but all in all very good plot and interesting descriptions about growing up and accepting your destiny and future. Would recommend to a friend who loves mermaids and fantasy. Romantic needs alike

Degradation The Kane Series Book 1 edition by Stylo Fantome Romance eBooks

Finally a book that stands out from a saturated market. Although having a lot of books to choose from is not a bad thing, but I've been getting bored with the same formulated romance novel. I've been in a book slump lately, but this finally snapped that.

Things that really separated this book from all the others (for me):

1. Tatum: She's a strong female character! I'm so glad this heroine didn't blush at any inappropriate comment like so many do. She could dish it out, be vulgar, and make me laugh. Usually when I hear the word feisty, I tend to think more negative personality traits and tend not to like the character. However, Tate is the first heroine that was feisty, but still a friendly person. She wasn't rude to anyone, but she didn't get stepped on either.

2. Jameson: I've never met an alpha quite like him. Sure, some have had traits similar to his but he's the only one that stayed consistent with how he was explained. The author showed us instead of told us, that doesn't happen often. I loved that although they weren't committed to a future and a happily ever after, he still said nice things. He wasn't cold and emotionless.

3. The overall plot: While they were playing games with one another and trying to get one on the other person, they still were honest with each other. I respected that.

4. It's been a long time since I've read sex scenes fully. To be honest, I've read so many that I feel like 'I've been there, done that' and end up skimming through those scenes. However, that was not the case with this book. I've never read a book with scenes like this and I enjoyed them. Their sex was important because they could fully be themselves and trust their insecurities with the other one. As Tate said, it was a way to get treated like she wanted, but would only allow it because she trusted him to stop if needed.

I can see some people having a hard time accepting this book because of the content involved in the bedroom. That's obviously okay, we all like different things. However, I just wanted to explain why I did like it so maybe someone can see a different pov. I think some people hear something they wouldn't be okay with and think "That's wrong" without thinking why a personality is the way it is. Is my sex life like this in the book? No. However, we all need and like different things. While I agree that there doesn't always have to be a reason to like something, it can just be that you enjoy it, it's apparent to me that Tate does have reasons. Mainly dealing with her father; they've never had a great relationship. He calls her names and treats her badly. However, in the bedroom she can control that and put a stop to it. She is the one in control. As I mentioned, we are entitled to our own opinions but at least think about why something is happening, instead of making a quick judgment.

Degradation The Kane Series Book 1 edition by Stylo Fantome Romance eBooks Reviews

This was my first read by this author and i think Stylo Fantome has just found herself another fan!

Although DEGRADATION is only part 1 of the Kane Trilogy, I have fallen completely in love with this book. Written in 3rd person was a new thing for me but i soon got use to it and it didnt interfere with my reading experience.

Degradation was a new concept story wise and made my read that much more interesting. The story revolved around two main characters, Tatum O'Shea and Jameson Kane and their sidekicks Ang (Angier) Tatums bestfriend and buddy with benefits (yes, Ang is male) and Sanders, Kane's assistant.

Kane and O'Shea had known each other previously and were reunited 7 years later but both had changed dramatically and couldn't be more different in their everyday lives but when it came to the bedroom, they both craved much the same. Things most would find disturbing they found in each other, as the heading implies, Degradation is the name of the game...

They were both players in this game, trying to constantly get one up on the other. In the end both would lose, there are no winners in this dangerous game, but unfortunately they figured this out all too late.

This book had me on the edge of my seat...nail biting stuff with each thrilling page-turn. I read this book from start to finish, annoyed when i had to stop for a few hours sleep.
The characters were extremely strong, well developed and completely perfect for their roles! Both Kane and O'Shea had brilliant personalities and depraved needs that had me totally turned on! The story flowed well, with NO areas of idle chatter or page-filler words...this was non-stop, NEED TO KNOW MORE, and grabbed my attention completely.

Even though this book sells as "dark", i certainly wouldn’t class it as dark...more erotica with a theme that some may not like? It did contain some violence but not in a way that was violent if that makes sense? There were NO cringe worthy moments that were hard to handle....it was quite tame compared to others in this category actually.
I on the other hand loved it and can't wait to see how the series plays out? I will definitely be exploring more of this authors work and give her a massive 5 stars for a job well done and an amazing beautifully degrading read!
💜💕💜
This book has been on my kindle over 3 years and my biggest regret is that it took me so long to get around to reading it. I LOVED it. I couldn't put it down. Jameson and Tate have one unexpected night seven years ago. Because he was her sister's boyfriend, she is treated like the one at fault and shunned by her family. It's kind of a blessing for her. She drops out of college which she hated and begins to live the lifestyle she wants. Working as a bartender, partying, going through a lot of men and committing to none, she never forgets that night with Jameson.
Then, while temping at a job, she runs into him. He tracks her down again, and they become involved in the most messed up, destructive, crazy relationship. Although they don't call it that. They are seriously messed up. It's not destined to go anywhere as neither of them want the hearts and flowers thing. But Tate's emotions begin to come into play and the game her and Jameson have been playing, begins to change. This book is a wild, messed up, crazy ride, but I couldn't get enough of it. Couldn't wait to get onto book 2.
Sobat has created a tight and simple masterpiece. It is obvious that she has done her research about eating disorders yet she doesn't preach or pander. She lets the story unfold to its own simple conclusion in a surprisingly satisfying way. The story itself provides the reader with tools to deal with their own problems. Additionally, there are resources listed in the back. This isn't a self-help book; it's a damned good novel. But it will not harm a person with anorexic tendencies. It may well help them.
My Review:
I really love this little town of Serendipity and because we already know the characters and the setting, I think that this little novella works really well. Nick and Kate have felt the draw to each other for a while, but Nick made a HUGE error along the way. He made a play at Faith when she came back to town simply because they'd been involved with each other during high school. Now Kate, who is Faith's best friend, feels like he isn't over his feeling for Faith. She played second fiddle for a guy in college and got her heart crushed. She isn't ready to risk her heart again.

I like how Nick got Faith to help him with Kate. He doesn't know her history doesn't fully realize what he's up against. Luckily for Nick, he has their incredible chemistry on his side and that's hard for Kate to ignore especially when she's trapped with him.

This was a fun little book. It was a quick read and gave me a good romantic fix when I needed one quick and couldn't commit to a huge, long book.
Personally I always wondered what happened to Kate. Having read all the other Serendipity novels I am glad to have closure. Make sure you read all her prior novels in this series and you will love this one.
I really enjoyed reading this story. Since the main characters are characters I was familiar with from the
"Serendipity" series, I found myself feeling like I was reading about people I've met...really cool. You don't
need to have read the series to enjoy reading this story, but if you have you will enjoy it just a little bit more.
Boy likes girl. Girl isscared he's not serious. One talk and boom, HEA. Honestly this should have been a subplot in someone else's book
This book compliments the first in the series. The first book is about Faith and Ethan. This book is about Kate, Faith's best friend. Nick dated Faith in high school but it did not work out. Kate is falling for Nick but does not want to be "2ND choice". In a very short time they risk their friendship to act on their feelings for each other. The short book just warms you up to these 2 main characters before ending. I would rather have seen this as bonus to the first book rather than a stand alone book. It was hardly worth the price (but I will pick up the next real book in the series on Ethan's brother).
Enjoyed the story but it was a very short read. The story was well written and characters could have been more developed over a longer storyline.
The story revolved around two people who have known each other for so long, Kate had a crush on Nick for a long time but he was interested in Kate best friend. When things didn't work out between Nick & Faith (Serendipity book 1) Nick started to notice Kate, however Kate was not interested in being the second best. and declined going out with Nick.

Carly Phillips is an amazing writer who brings characters to life, I really felt for Nick & Kate.

Would recommend for anyone who loves Carly & can read it as a stand alone book, only complaint is it was too short!
Carly Phillips does it again with this short visit to Serendipity. Kate and Nick's story was so sweet. I love how they came together, knowing where they were coming from. This is a story of going after what you want, friendship and love. I wish it was longer. We first meet Kate and Nick in Serendipity, the first book of the series, and I was rooting for them since then. It is hard to love someone and be too scared to tell or show them for fear of rejection, especially if they seem to be panting after your best friend. Hopefully we get to catch up with them both again in Perfect Fit, the first of the next set of books set in Serendipity. If you've never visited, this short read will certainly entice you and make you want to get to know this town and these people.
When she loses her husband, Alexis Ayze has to find a way to take care of her 4-year-old son, Jack. Her best option is her husband's family in Arizona. On her way to her in-laws' home on the reservation, Lexie loses her way in a storm. The car ends up in a ravine and they are trapped by a flash flood.

Michael Ayze becomes concerned because his brother's widow and his nephew are in unfamiliar territory and this storm isn't quite normal. Something is off about it. He spots Lexie's car in a flooded ravine and comes to the rescue. He has to remind himself that he is just her savior and nothing else. Of course that may not work for long. There is an attraction that just won't go away. And it didn't help when his mother suggested they keep with the old tradition and Michael should marry Lexie.

Michael is part of a group of medicine men, known as the Brotherhood, who are fighting a battle for their people. The Skinwalkers are Navajo men who have taken up Navajo witchcraft to become the power of the reservation. The evil skinwalkers trying to take over and the Brotherhood trying to stop it are all searching for a map that will give them the advantage.

There is the matter of Lexie's talent for communicating with ghosts. Michael has to come to terms with this bit of information. Ghosts are evil so Lexie's ability to see them is not a good thing in his belief system. But it appears that Lexie is to be the Message Bearer for the Brotherhood whether they like it or not.

Now all Michael has to do is keep Lexie alive.

Shapeshifters, ghosts, medicine man and arranged marriages--Shadow Warrior has it all. Lexie and Michael spend a lot of time trying to not be attracted to each other while his mother spends a lot of time trying to arrange their marriage. It's really no contest. I liked the heroes and their interactions with each other but I felt that the villains could have been a little more developed. I really didn't feel a strong bad guy vibe from the bad guys. Overall, I enjoyed Shadow Warrior and look forward to reading the other books in the Brotherhood Series

Willow
Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

The Omen David Seltzer 9780451219428 Books

I have been dying to get my hands on this book for many years but kept getting sidetracked. Worse was being a very early adopter of the Kindle platform and not seeing it go into digital distribution. It got to the point that I had no choice but to pick up a used copy. The copy was in better shape than advertised and it was dirt cheap. After I finished it I passed it to a friend with instructions to keep passing it forward since it was hard to find.

If you have watched the original movie more than twice you'll probably find little in this book since it is (unless I am terribly wrong) a novelization. It is very quick read, I think I finished it in one or two sittings.
Fine work by David. Read it all the way through in a couple of nights. Though i do recommend reading this alone in the middle of the night. Adds to the atmosphere )
This is a great book. I loved the original movies and the remake. Even though this book is a work of fiction, it is so prophetic. It makes for great late night reading.
This classic is an amazing work of supernatural fiction.
I saw the Omen series for the first time and had a good time watching them. So I wanted to check out the book series. The Omen was really good to read and would like to read the rest of the series after reading the 1ft 2 books.
Holds up well as a 1970's-style cerebral horror film. One of the era's perennial favorites.
I had to purchase a second hand copy of this book because its not available on and its out of print! I read this book when it was first released and somehow lost it....what a great read. Hopefully it will come out in print again!
A ++++++++

Prime Evil New Stories by the Masters of Modern Horror Douglas E Winter 9780451159090 Books Reviews

This is a very good anthology and includes some real gems, such as Stephen King's The Night Flyer. My only criticism is that it could have taken a few more risks in order to give us some really experimental pieces. Overall, though...very well done.
Prime Evil was pretty good. There wasn't really any gratuitous violence. People did die either by the hand of someone or by evil spirits, but it wasn't too graphic. The story did involve Satan worship. The plot was every thirteen years, you had to kill a family member and take out their heart in order to maintain immortality. I read the book pretty quickly. It kept my interest throughout. I read the book in about 2-2.5 days. I enjoyed it!
I give this book one star just because of the writers it includes, and I give it a second star only for the stories by David Morrell and Peter Straub. Otherwise, this is without a doubt the worst collection of horror stories I have ever read. There is no consistant theme, not that there should be one, but a theme would have given Prime Evil at least something to separate it from all the other collections. The authors included, though famous and well respected, have seemingly selected from the bottom of the barrel. The Stephen King story, Night Flyers, is probably one of his worst and of the headliners, only Straub's The Juniper Tree had any value, and it is only a horror story by association, having no real place in a genre collection. As a whole, the book works better as a marketing campaign. Stories by Jack Cady, Thomas Tessier, and Charles Grant are amusing; otherwise - don't waste your time.
A stunning anthology of short stories by the current masters of the horror genre. Every story is wickedly compelling, full of vampires, both traditional and some modern updates of the species. Each piece explores the human psyche and soul, revealing out most primal needs and fears as humans.

Pull up your reading chair and turn on the lights. Then read and enjoy!
Great book of short stories. I read it as a kid, and remembered a specific story from it...had to order to read again.
