"The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle" is British author Kirsty Wark's first novel. Set on the Scottish Isle of Arran, in the Firth of Clyde, the story goes back and forth in both time and character voices. One of the two main characters, Elizabeth Pringle, has just died in 2006 and has willed her island house to the mother of Martha Morrison. Martha's mother, Anna, has just been diagnosed with a form of dementia and is in a fitful condition. Wark's story is how the past encroaches on the present. Elizabeth's long, long life is at an end, while Martha's adult life is just beginning.

Wark's story is peopled with characters who seem just a touch different enough not to be stereotypes; "rugged island man", "mother with dementia", "bad-mood sister", "career woman who makes bad choices in lovers", and, of course, "island dweller who has 'secrets'". The expected love happens between characters...except when it doesn't. Love is thwarted by war and by departures to far off lands. Kirsty Wark has written a pleasant story of love and secrets that you'll enjoy reading but won't remember in six months that you've read it. And that's okay; not every book has to be "War and Peace". Just read it and enjoy it.

The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle Kirsty Wark 8601410694012 Books Reviews

Well written and moves along at a nice pace. Beautiful descriptive passages that really enhance the narrative. It kept me entertained until the end and left a nice aftertaste.
I purchased this book for my wife, as living in view of Arran and it being a special place for her, where she spent many holidays growing up, I thought she would enjoy it. My wife thought it was a great story and very emotional, but more a woman's book. She would highly recommend this book, even you didn't know anything about Arran.
Excellent read !
I was looking forward to reading this as I admire Kirsty Wark as a journalist. The book is well written and pleasant enough but it's rather a predictable story and really a romance which is a genre I don't usually read. I know Arran reasonably well so enjoyed the descriptions of the places. The chapters alternate between Elizabeth's diary telling the story of her life, and the story of Martha, the daughter of the woman Elizabeth left her house to, in the present time. Easy to read.
The idea of the scenery is the best thing about this book ... Scottish landscape and the surrounding seas evoked beautifully ... This is a bit of a disappointment in terms of a read , ( it's all very neat and a bit mills and boon ) but would make a fabulous 2 hour TV movie . Having said that , if you like mills and boon go for it , you'll love it !
From the beginning I really enjoyed this book. I liked the authors' style and how the story unfolded.

The story focused on Elizabeth's younger character and you don't learn if she matured enough to appreciate her mothers point of view in relation to the choices her Dad made.

I felt the last third was somewhat predictable and too perfect. For me the revelation wasn't the answer to everything and left holes in earlier parts of the story. It was almost rushed to wrap all story parts into one neat little bow. Without revealing a spoiler the part at the with the nephew was ridiculous and had nothing to contribute to the ending?!
I loved this book "so much" that I plan to buy three more and give them as gifts to three of my life-long friends and soul mates. Wark paints a picture of the island off the coast of Scotland with such elegant brush strokes of words. She pays attention to the plants and people with almost equal detail. As a bonus the view of growing old and death becomes such a gentle and smart topic that I wish the book was a standard library entry in all retirement homes. The young Martha provides the electric and modern moments that would keep a younger reader engaged and the mother daughter relationships of two very different families is explored in depth. The ending provides a "drop the book" revelation that will bring tears to a reader's eyes and make flipping the pages back to key moments a must. Love the book.
The interesting thing is that I bought it because the Princess Cruise we will be going on has it listed as a book discussion title for on board ship. Thanks Princess Cruises for a beautiful read.
