War Without Mercy has been hailed by the New York Times as "one of the most original and important books to be written about the war between Japan and the United States." In this monumental history, professor John Dower reveals a hidden, explosive dimension of the Pacific War - race - while writing what John Toland has called "a landmark book...a powerful, moving, and evenhanded history that is sorely needed in both America and Japan."

Drawing on American and Japanese songs, slogans, cartoons, propaganda films, secret reports, and a wealth of other documents of the time, Dower opens up a whole new way of looking at that bitter struggle of four and a half decades ago and its ramifications in our lives today. As Edwin O. Reischauer, former ambassador to Japan, has pointed out, this book offers "a lesson that the postwar generations need most...with eloquence, crushing detail, and power."

War Without Mercy Race and Power in the Pacific War (Audible Audio Edition) John W Dower Tim Campbell Tantor Audio Books

I am not surprised that at least 2/3 of the customer reviews of this book are favorable. It is a powerful and important book that should be read by anyone who wants to better understand World War II.

After reading the negative customer reviews of the book, I have to wonder, Just exactly what book did those people read? How in the world is Dower's book "revisionist"? Because he suggests we should not have nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Well, guess what: General Eisenhower, Admiral Leahy, Admiral Halsey, and a host of other senior military officers did not think we needed to nuke Japan either--nor did Winston Churchill, Secretary of the Navy Forrestal, Ambassador Grew, and the vast majority of the scientists who developed the bomb. For that matter, since the 1990s, most historians and other scholars have recognized that we did not need to nuke Japan. The charge that Dower excuses Japanese war crimes and only criticizes American war crimes is utterly ludicrous. Dower does no such thing, and it is hard to fathom how anyone who actually reads the book can come to such a conclusion.

Dower's book reinforces the reality that war is never a "glorious" undertaking. It is a human tragedy that should only be done in self-defense.

Excellent read, nicely written
the Pacific war was actually a race based war, each side hated each other and fought to the death. The Japanese hated the white colonial race and the white races hated the yellow sob,s it makes for grim reading but a very good view of the roots of that bloodbath.
The book served its purpose for a history class.
very powerfully written, most insightful and interesting, superb writing
Quite a historical review---no punches withheld !
Precedes Dower's _Embracing Defeat_ in the historical timeline, but was actually written later. This pair of books gives a deep understanding of the Pacific War's origins and the later American Occupation.
Just as described
