Werewolves, in my opinion, don't get the attention and credit they deserve. Vampires usually steal the spotlight, get the girl, and have people begging to be one of them. Our lycanthropic friends, however, tend to be depicted as hairy, drooly, sometimes mindless, beasts. Doesn't sound very appealing, does it? In The Mayfair Moon, J.A. Redmerski goes deep into the heart of the werewolf culture, shining light on a society that spans centuries filled with war, secrets, betrayal, dire consequences, and forbidden love ~ all the core elements of a juicy page-turner.

This book had me constantly chiming four little words: didn't see that coming. Just as soon as you get cozy with the way you think the story is going to go, it flips a switch and you're left reeling.

Hallowell, Maine is a very different place from anything Adria has ever known. Not only is her scenery changed, but her once-loving, big sister is practically a catatonic witch. The odd and strange becomes Adria's everyday life, and she can't help but question why: Why is her sister so different? Why are people getting sick? Why are the Mayfair's so interested in her? ... It's all quite a bit to take in for a girl who's life's already been turned upside down.

I'll admit, I expected another generic story about a young girl falling for the mysterious guy in school, a little bit of danger, and a happy ending, but I was pleasantly surprised to receive so much more. There's a foundation of werewolf history built here as we learn about their society, their politics, and how they came to be. It's not all supernatural glory ~ in fact, their life has a tinge of tragedy in almost every aspect, and I can't help but think it's the actions of their fathers that are to blame.

I really enjoyed all the unexpected connections that developed throughout the story. We find that not everyone is who we think they are, and it eventually comes to the point that we don't know friends from enemies. (Questions begged to be answered in the next novel, Kindred.) However, the connection between Adria and Isaac can never be questioned, although I did feel as if their relationship was a little forced and very sudden. At first, I had a difficult time believing their emotions for one another, but as their relationship grew, I found myself rooting for them.

Adria's role in the novel, I feel, will turn out to be much more than she, or we as readers, ever expected. I won't give away too much, but there are hints throughout the novel that had a tinge of foreshadowing I couldn't ignore. There are secrets about her own life before the Mayfair's she hasn't yet discovered, and I think her place in the werewolf world will change the course of its history.

So many unanswered questions! Who is Adria? What are Trajan and Viktor to each other, really? What's a Praverian Chronicle? ...

I tried to love this book, but truthfully it really bored me. ive been working on it for about a month now, and it is really hard to get to the end. Not much is going on at all, its kind of like a Twilight story, with wolves instead of vamps. and a whole lot of nothing is going on. Its not dark, its not sexy. Not feeling the "love" story. Im sorry for this review, as I love her other books. The In the Company of Killers series is one of my all time favorites. so much goes on in each book. this one not so much.

My Musings I’ve read J.A. Redmerski’s published novels, The Edge of Always and The Edge of Never, and I loved her writing style. So when I saw The Mayfair Moon on , I had to one-click. I was interested to see what J.A could do with paranormal.

“His whole body jerked forward, plunging him into the frigid, white ground. He was on his hands and knees, his head rolled up and backward, the whites of his eyes churning black. The first fiendish growl ripped through the air, echoing off every looming tree.”
The Mayfair Moon‘s paranormal creature of choice is werewolves. However, they are not werewolves as we think of them. Instead, J.A’s werewolves changed into half-human, half-beast creatures. At first, I was shocked and a bit grossed out, but that feeling eventually passed.

The Mayfair Moon was a very interesting novel. It follows Adria as she starts her new life up north after an attack by a half-beast–a werewolf. After the day that Adria and her sister are attacked, her sister starts behaving oddly. Eventually, Adria is thrust into a world where there are two warring packs, and her sister is part of one, and not to mention, they want her dead because of what she knows. Luckily, Adria befriends Zia, who is a part of the other pack, and they become friends. And soon, Adria finds herself falling for the ‘prince’ of the pack, Isaac.

“Isaac Mayfair was my world now.”
I liked Adria’s character. She was expressive and brave, and she assimilated well into the world in which she was thrown. She was tough, as well, and didn’t go running and hiding when danger came her way. I could really relate to her, and that made her shine.

“Isaac was way too controlled, so much that it made him unreadable.”
Isaac was the brooding type. Quiet, observant, powerful those worlds pretty much sum him up. Although he was dismissive of Adria at first, they started warming up to each other as the novel went on. I’m glad that they didn’t have an insta-love–only an insta-attraction, which is more realistic.

“Isaac leaned in and kissed me long and hard on the forehead. I could feel the unbridled emotion in his touch, the undeniable need to protect me from everything. The warmth from his mouth spread all throughout my body.”
I also enjoyed the two of them together. Their personalities match up fantastically and they were definitely a power couple. Although they disagreed on some things and had some problems, they were still perfect for each other. They balanced each other out and brought out the best in each other. I can’t wait to see how their relationship continues to progress as the series goes on.

The world that J.A. built in this novel was unreal in a real way. It was creatively weaved and changed everything you thought you knew about werewolves. After the initial shock, I loved J.A’s use of half-human werewolves instead of the typical fully-transformed wolf. It really gave her an unique edge in the ever-growing world of werewolf-based paranormal novels.

The Mayfair Moon was a great novel with a unique concept that I couldn’t put down. After trucking through this novel at such a rapid pace, I can’t wait to see what else this series brings.
