Clayton only THINKS his grandmother is an ordinary grandma who runs a diner. In reality, she's the boss of a top-secret government organization and the POTUS has her on speed-dial. The diner, though real enough, is actually a cover for and entrance to a gigantic underground office complex housing the US Special Service. Honestly, Clayton's discovery that his parents and grandparents are THIS important, and that the instincts of a government agent come naturally to him, is not unlike that of a certain Harry Potter who learns that Hogwarts is a thing and he isn't just a kid who lives in a cupboard, but a wizard. The emotional impact is the same: Wait, you mean I'm not just a ho-hum nobody? My life is cooler -- and way more dangerous -- than I ever dreamed? With his grandmother's great reluctance, Clayton is recruited as a decoy to help solve a series of mother/child kidnappings at DC-area malls that number a senator's wife and daughter among the victims. Clayton realizes at the start that his own and other lives might be at stake. What he's not quite as prepared for is discovering that he may lose his best friend, his beloved lacrosse team, the goodwill of his coach and teachers, and any semblance of normal life as a twelve-year-old because he can't promise not to blow off practice, games, and other responsibilities, and cannot. tell. anyone. anything.
For a fast read with plenty of action, cool technology, a male protagonist, and just enough emotional depth to make it all matter, pick this up.

Fast-paced action thrillers for middle-grade kids are hard to come by, especially ones with guys as the main character, so when I heard about Clayton Stone, At Your Service I immediately reserved it at the library to see if it was something a young cousin-by-marriage might enjoy.
Clayton Stone is your average seventh-grader at your average Washington, DC, private school, much more interested in his lacrosse team than either his homework or domestic politics, when he answers a phone locked inside a drawer in a desk at his grandmother's house and...it's the White House. From there it's a wild ride--literally--as Clayton's pulled into working as an extremely junior agent for one of those super-secret agencies that nobody's supposed to know exist, in an effort to thwart a kidnapping that could have Serious National Consequences. This leads to harrowing adventures in the underwear section of Macy's, a hotel between the Key Bridge and the Rosslyn Metro station that I have actually stayed at twice, and secret underground headquarters and hideouts throughout the 202 area code.
I'm pretty sure cousin-by-marriage is going to love this book, which I ended up purchasing for the lucky kid.
edited to add I bought the hardcover, but mistakenly reviewed the version. Sorry!
very well writen, the story keeps moving so well one can't put it down.
This is a great spy book for kids! It's lots of fun and I'm looking forward to the second one!
This is a great book, very funny with colorful (in a good way) language. The whole family loved it from our 6 year and 11 year olds to the adults.
Can't wait till the next one comes out!
My ten year old son really enjoyed this book and the sequel! A great read for the pre-teen/tween crowd!
Clayton Stone is such an appealing character! He discovers that his grandmother is not who she seems--she's involved in clandestine government service. When the Special Service needs a kid to help solve a series of kidnappings, Clayton agrees to help. His new responsibilities create tension with his friends and teammates, but Clayton's courage and sense of duty carry him through--and makes us fall in love with him in the process.
Clayton Stone, At Your Service is well written and paced just right, with lots of chapter-ending cliff hangers to keep you on the edge of your seat. I recommend borrowing it from your kid and reading it yourself. I did.
Ena Jones' debut MG novel, Clayton Stone, At Your Service, is rollicking good fun. I loved the premise of a regular kid discovering that his grandmother is a spy and more, and then getting in on the action. And boy does he get serious action and the best part it is that he drives much of it -- he takes the necessary risks to save people from the bad guys. I also loved that he was just as concerned about letting down his lacrosse team. He misses his parents. He is very human -- a 3-dimensional character. Best of all, the adventure has just begun. There's a second Clayton book that Mrs. Jones is revising ) No, I haven't seen it, and even I did, I wouldn't spill any secrets.
And now for some quibbles. I wondered why the present tense narration and the time stamps at the beginning of the chapters. I thought they were completely unnecessary. The writing is clear and there's no confusion at all where we are. But these are really quibbles, nothing that detracts from the enjoyment of a fast-paced adventure of a boy in America today. Well done, Ena!!!
